Sports Analytics Opens Digital Career Pathways for AL Students

Sports Analytics Opens Digital Career Pathways for Alabama Students

Montgomery Public Schools (MPS) students are learning about data science in the classroom and experiencing how it can be used in their future careers firsthand. Through QuantHub’s career-connected learning approach, these students are turning their passion for sports into pathways toward high-paying digital careers, establishing a new model for workforce development in Alabama.

Where Classroom Meets Career: The Sports Analytics Experience

On November 15, over 30 MPS students experienced the future of sports careers at Samford University’s Center for Sports Analytics, the nation’s first facility of its kind. Students toured the facility and learned from faculty how data analytics is used in the sports, business, and marketing world.

“The sports industry’s demand for data analytics talent continues to grow exponentially,” says Darin White, PhD, Margaret Gage Bush Distinguished Professor and Executive Director, Sports Industry Program and Center for Sports Analytics. “By engaging students early through hands-on experiences with real sports data, we’re building the next generation of sports industry professionals.”

As Alabama’s first high school data science teacher, Dr. Habib has witnessed how real-world applications transform student engagement. “When our students experienced analytics in action at Samford, they saw their future careers take shape,” Dr. Habib shares. “Sports analytics shows them that data science isn’t abstract – it’s a pathway to doing what they love.”

The visit made a strong impact on the students. “Samford University was an experience given to us that opened our eyes in a way we’ve not imagined before, and we are glad to have been exposed to the opportunities available during the trip,” shared one student. Another student reflected, “Our experience at Samford was very informative and enjoyable. The trip organizers and the data analytics faculty at Samford gave us a powerful insight into the importance of being a Sports Analyst. Walking the university made us feel like we were a part of the Samford family!”

Bridging Education and Industry: QuantHub’s Career-Connected Learning Approach

These hands-on experiences build on the proven foundation of QuantHub’s Data Scholars program, which demonstrated strong outcomes during its inaugural year:

  • Program graduates are projected to earn starting salaries averaging $85,956, significantly above Alabama’s average starting salary of $47,826, according to a 2024 economic impact study by Emory University’s Goizueta Business School.
  • 26 scholars completed paid internships across 21 leading employers
  • 46% participation from rural districts, demonstrating statewide impact
  • Over 450 industry-relevant data skills mastered by program participants

Building on success this year, the 2025 program introduces a sports analytics track, combining students’ passion for athletics with the in-demand data skills employers seek.
